Manuscript Letter Signed / Autographed Letter Signed from one of Luke’s old classmates at Eton who writes to Luke’s first posting in Sierra Leone in September 1910 and reminisces about the time when everyone at Eton would apply to Philip Sassoon the “amazingly insulting nickname “Jew”: “My dear Harry, very many thanks for your good wishes and the ring, which I hope will serve a talisman puissant enough to avert the evil consequences which seem to have been the invariable commitments of marriage in the case of your other friends ! I don’t think i am really misanthropic, although I admit that things interest me more than people on the whole….curiously enough my wife was at the Orsi’s in Florence a few weeks after you had left, and the house seems still to have been full of the “Lukian” epic ! How long to you intend to stop in your African furnace – and what are the books about ? My fortunes are still in the melting-pot and unless the present job becomes very much more lucrative in the near future, I shall chuck it and try something else. I had a rather jolly letter from “Jew” Sassoon [that is Sir Philip Albert Gustave David Sassoon] from India. Sapper is out there too with the 17th Lancers. How extraordinarily far away Eton seems ! Has it ever struck you how amazingly insulting the nickname of “Jew” was, and how readily it was adopted and admitted by its users and its victim ? Nasty things, boys – I will try to write regularly in the future….FCL [?]”

Typed / and partly Manuscript Letter by Sir Harry Luke’s former Tutor, Lionel Ford: “My dear Lukach, thank you indeed for writing so kindly abpout my appointment to Harrow. I hope you will forgive my answer takes a typewritten form. It seems almost the only way in which I could hope to acknowledge in reasonable time the letters of congratulations and good wishes that have poured in upon me….It is a great honour to have been asked to do this big work; I feel that very much, and I like to think it is in Repton’s honour rather than mine. But it will be a dreadful wrench to leave the old school…..[Ford continues to add in ink: “I don’t like your account of climate-yellow fever – But I feel v. proud of you and your work out there. Dominus return ! ….Yours very sincerely Ex-Tutor, always Lionel Ford”].

Typed / Partly Manuscript Letter Signed (MLS) / from Eton Headmaster Cyril Argentine Alington to Harry Lukach, after Alington had become Headmaster at Shrewsbury School: “My dear Harry, I think you will rather admire me for having a typewriter….i thank you for your charming letter and the Photograph which is most impressive. I was very glad to hear from you again and to know that your affairs are so flourishing…..We have just been to France for a week and have fallen badly in love with two or three churches, notably St.Ouen and Beauvais. I am very sorry to hear of the decadence of the Hotel Rome, but if it has deserted its charming Catholic name I quite see that success was impossible for it. You will, I know, b sorry to hear that I lost my mother at the beginning of this month……I am liking Life at Shrewsbury….which is a delightful place in itself….you don’t say how long your present job will last, but I hope it will allow you coming home before very long. My wife sends her best wishes & so would my daughters if they knew you – Ever yours affect. Cyril Alington”.

Manuscript Letter to Harry Lukach while in Sierra Leone, sent from Robert William Chapman in his position as Delegate for the Clarendon Press, informing Harry Lukach that the Clarendon Press has accepted his book [″A Bibliography of Sierra Leone”, Oxford, At the Clarendon Press, 1910] for publication: “My dear Lukach – I think we used to meet sometimes at the Strafford Club – you will be glad to know that the Delegates have now made an order accepting your book for publication as a contribution to learning and in the interest of the public service…..I am afraid there is no prospect of paying expenses out of sales, but we shall do our best so you will not expect the price to be low. Perhaps 8/6. I think you will find that a good price will not damage a book of this kind either in sale or in reputation…..our terms to authors are 25% off the publication….I am to congratulate you on the Delegate’s behalf for keeping the flag flying. Collection of manuscript and printed materials regarding a genealogical research for the aristocratic Family ‘Zandrowitsch – Zander’. Sir Harry Luke who was related to the Zander family was assisted by a lady from Koenigsberg in Prussia. The lady in question,Genealogist Helene Motherby from Koenigsberg, writes in a letter from April 6th, 1910 to Luke’s posting in Sierra Leone and has some excellent news regarding her research of the Zander family. The letter includes a manuscript family tree of the Zander family (Carl Lazarus von Zander etc.) / In a second letter from 23rd of October1911, Helene Motherby requested information from a Heraldic Office in St.Petersburg. The original answer was written in Russian and a translation into german is accompanying the original document in which Helene Motherby was informed that information regarding an aristocratic family can only be granted if the requestor can proof his/her aristocratic ancestry connected to the family in question. The request was in detail answered by pointing to the relevant Genealogical Offices in Livland / Estland / Gouvernement Kiew. / Helene Motherby apologizes for the ‘meager’ result and urges Sir Harry Luke to become a member of ‘The Society of Genealogists’ in London. She encloses the first quarterly report of ‘The Society of Genealogists of London’ which also lists the members (among them Fraulein Helene Motherby) and also includes two prefilled application forms for Sir Harry that would allow him to join the Society (Helene Motherby has signed both papers as a guarantor). /

Stock Certificate / Papers, correspondence and ephemera from the estate of J.H.Lukach: Interesting letters from Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Company (Sir Harry Luke has discovered that his father had shares in the Westinghouse Bremen Gesellschaft (Germany) and the several letters refer to the transfer of shares just shortly after Black Friday / Typescript of a letter by J.H.Lukach to Westinghouse, thanking him for ‘your kindness in giving me an option on 500 Shares of the Societe Anonyme Westinghouse’ / Old stocks as well as J.H.Lukach’s will including a letter from solicitor Laurence Alfred Baker (20, Copthall Avenue and Stock Exchange, London) to Harry Luke in which he urges Sir Harry Luke to destroy the certificate of the New Zealand Gold Company to prevent a query into its value cropping up again – Laurence Alfred Baker also indirectly refers to the recent crash at the stockmarket by mentioning: ‘It is most interesting, and no doubt significant, that in bad times such as these, when one might almost say that everything is falling, there is a definite and persistant demand for Consolidated Signal and Westinghouse Shares. / Also included is extensive documentation of J.H.Lukach’s estate etc. / Old IOU’s / One postcard to Harry Luke Esq. in Alt-Aussee (Austria) – from his father / One letter to Sir Harry in Kensington from a source undeciphered (1965) / Original, hungarian documentation (certificate) of the name J.H.Luke / Lease documentation of Ashley Gardens in the City of Westminster /

Humorous Postcard “Vituperation”, sent to his Mother & Sister from Cyprus to Paris by Harry Lukach (Sir Harry Luke) during the month of March, 1912, while he awaits news about a new posting: “…no news this week”. Luke clearly used the term “Vituperation” as a hint of knowing that deliberations are going on regarding his next career-move. 1912 was an important year for Luke since he had just started under Goold-Adams in Government House, Nicosia. But he was destined for moving up and “At the end of 1912 [he] became a Junior Assistant Secretary to Government together with Douglas Jardine” (C&M I, 217) after Luke had made the decision “to make my career in the Colonial Service”.

Manuscript Letter Signed (MLS) / Autographed Letter Signed (ALS) from Harry Charles Lukach (Sir Harry Luke) to his father. Luke writes on October 4th, using Stationery of “Government House, Cyprus” from his posting as Private Secretary of Governor Sir Hamilton Goold-Adams in Cyprus, where Luke was posted between November 1911 – c. October 1914. At this time Luke is awaiting a promotion [it will come a few weeks after this letter was written and he is updating his father]: “My dear Father, yours of 27 Sept from Vienna just received…..This is our last week on Troodos…in 5 days we go down to Nicosia, where it will be hot for another 3 weeks or so after we get there. I have not yet said anything to Sir H[amilton Goold-Adams] about the S.A.offer; I think that the best opportunity to do so would be when he actually recommends me for a higher post here. This cannot be done at once, as he will first have to get rid of the present holder (the Asst. Secretary), wh[ich he will try to do when he goes on leave. But don’t mention this, as he has not yet tackled the C.O. I enclose a photo taken lately of a shooting match here between Soldiers & Civilians. Sir H[amilton Goold-Adams] shot for the latter, & I was a spectator (in Colonel Glasses). The Soldiers won. Much love to you three – Your loving son Harry”.
