Few visitors to Hait have not been awakened in the night by the sound of drums. On the dark mountains, in the valleys, the drums call- call the ‘vaudun’ worshipers to chant, dance, pray together- they call the gods to come forth with blessings and healing. The ecstacy of this experience, the knowledge of a world beyond, has enabled Haitians to know joy. Rodman first visited Haiti in 1938. He was the co-director of Le Centre d’Art in the late Forties, initiating and directing the painting of the Haitian murals in the Cathedral of Ste. Trinite in Port-at-Prince. His wife, Carole Cleaver, is a journalist who first came to Haiti in 1962. During the seventeen winters she lived in Jacmel on Haiti’s south coast, she developed a deep interest in the gods of vaudun.
