Pages 185 – 191 of Volume I with some stronger browning. Otherwise the interior very clean. All mezzotints in very good or even better condition. This is the original copy from the historical Castle-Freke Library in West Cork (Ireland), with two armorial bookplates to front and rear pastedown with the family’s motto ‘Pro Patria’. With two pages of manuscript annotations by a contemporary hand with a reference between the common name “Tarbet” in Scotland and a place-name in County Kerry in Ireland” (pages 13 of Volume II) / another entry is on page 12 of Volume II regarding the name-sake “Loch-Loung” for a Lake of ships in Scotland and Ireland.

Overall a very good condition with only minor signs of wear of this extremely rare and early edition of one of the rarest publications of advice on prudence and virtue, written by the Marquess of Halifax and published as an address to his daughter Elizabeth Stanhope, Countess of Chesterfield (1677 – 1708). Later editions are more common but this 17th century publication is the nicest version of this book we have ever handled.

This is not the usual tourist pamphlet but a thorough architectural study of great importance for the History of this Abbey.

Collection of 45 manuscript postcards, signed and sent by Sir Basil Liddell Hart’s second wife Kathleen Liddell Hart to Adrian Liddell Hart. 32 of the postcards were sent by Kathleen from trips she undertook with Basil throughout the world, reporting to Sir Basil’s son Adrian from their experiences at conferences, meetings with governments, exhausting visits to war cemeteries etc. etc. A lot of the postcards very detailed with a good insight into Basil Liddell Hart’s routines (″Basil is sweating over two articles” / “At the moment he is seeing Monnel to discuss the Schumann Plan” / etc. ). The remaining 13 postcards were all written after Sir Basil Liddel Hart’s death and for example deal with the sale of the estate: John Cooper telling me that the N.P.G. paid 9500 Sterling for the picture. He wants more information on Hein and Basil. Wonder how much our Kennington’s are worth ? /
