This book attempts to assess the effects of J.D. Bernal’s 1939 publication “The Social Function of Science”. It includes fifteen essays by scientists concerned with or affected by the original book. The view presented here is one that suggests that an affluent, prosperous society free from war, hunger and tyranny is technically possible. Some of the contributors include C.P.Snow, C.F. Powell, J.B.S. Haldane and J.D. Bernal himself.
