Adventures of a Younger Son. Edited with an introduction by William St. Clair.

London and others, Oxford University Press, 1974. 21cm x 13.2cm. xxiv, 477 (2) pages. Map of Indian Ocean and China. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket in protective collector’s mylar. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. [Oxford English Novels – General Editor: James Kinsley].

This is one of the great adventure stories: the wild, violent, and prejudiced journal of a British officer who deserts his ship in India and joins the corsairs. Trelawny maintained all his life that it was the story of his own life. ‘The Pirate’s’ fantastic tales of war and love in the East brought him the friendship of Shelley and Byron, with whose names he will always be associated. The text of this edition is closer to Trelawny’s intentions than any previously printed. It includes, for the first time, important passages omitted from the earlier editions because they were judged too coarse besides innumerable other corrections and restorations.

The editor, William St. Clair, is the author of ‘Lord Elgin and the Marbles’ and ‘That Greece Might Still Be Free’, and winner of the Royal Society of Literature W. H. Heinemann Award for 1972.
