[16], LVI, [8], 246 pages,[10 pages of Index], [with 3 astronomical foldout engravings by english Cartographer and Explorer John Senex / The Engravings show the Ptolemaic Geocentric System with the Earth as centre of the Universe and discuss other models as well by pointing to pages within the text that reflect on the illustrations / Two of the Engravings are showing the Stars and Constellations over Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia Minor, Asia etc.]. ]. Original Hardcover / bound in contemporary panelled calf. The book has been sympathetically rebacked to style. Besides a spot of hard green adhesive to the front board in very good condition. The armorial 18th century bookplate of one Dr. Blackett appears on the first pastedown [″A coat of arms divided into three portions, with three stars and three scallop shells throughout. At the helm is the head of an eagle, and elaborate mantling, flowers, and leaves surround the crest. Below is the motto ‘Nous Travailler ons dans L’Esperance’”] / The text of this rare and notoriously underrated book is complete and clean with the three foldout engravings of the cosmos to the rear with only a small archival paper restoration to one of the engravings.

Includes two folded maps in Volume One: First Map: “A Plan of the present Chanels [sic] of the Rivers Hiddekel or Tigris and Euphrates exhibiting the Site of Moses Garden and River of Eden” / Second Map: “The Situation of the Land & Garden of Eden together with the Rivers of Paradise as they are imagined to have been Situate by some Writers who thought that the Garden of Eden was planted in that which was afterwards called the Holy Land”. Original Hardcover / 18th century full leather with new spinelabels. All three Volumes are now in protective Mylar. with dustjacket. All Volumes with some damage to spine but all still firm and holding. Overall some faint staining and foxing only at very few locations because of the excellent paper-quality of this publication. Edges of bookblock and binding slightly rubbed. Overall in very good and firm condition with only minor signs of wear. Few dogears. Front free endpaper partially torn, name of pre-owner, Reverend Richard Meade, verso the frontispiece. Collation complete: Bilingual titlepage, 12 double-page maps of England, partly beautifully border-coloured, 6 unnumbered pages of Index with distances in miles, one (1) General Map of England (″Carte Generale” of Engand by D’Ogilby), 101 full-page maps of routes/streets, Engraved titlepage for the Appendix, One (1) double-page of explanations for the London-City-Plan, 17 beautiful maps and engravings of a variety of english cities, also with a section on Ireland (Dublin, Waterford, Kinsale, Galway, Limerick). Original 18th-century contemporary calf with gilt lettering on spine and on five raised bands. The Volume is now protected in Collector’s Mylar. Very good+ condition with only minor signs of external wear. Some rubbing and corners slightly bumped but overall excellent. Interior near fine with only the slightest occasional spotting. Extremely Rare and even rarer in this condition !

The publication was just recently enlarged with a detailed, Topographical Index (July 2023)]. Complete Title: “The Compleat Irish Traveller, containing A general Description of the most Noted Cities, Towns, Seats, Buildings, Loughs &c. in the Kingdom of Ireland, Interspersed with Observations on the Manners, Customs, Antiquities, Curiosities and Natural History of that Country. With Elegant Copper Plates”. Pagination of [Volume III]: Hand-coloured Frontispiece, [No separate titlepage], 416 pages, XXXIII pages of an Index, 1 page “Directions to the Binder”, 10 pages “A Chronological Table of Remarkable Events, Discoveries and Inventions”, with Four Engravings (including Frontispiece). Obviously this work was robbed of many of the maps but those which remain have the original hand-colouring in stunning condition (see description). This work is difficult to handle if not in a sturdy binding ! Original Edition in professionally rebound halfleather with gilt lettering on spine and extra-strong boards, suited for this heavy set. This masterpiece of underestimated english local history is of great interest because of its fold out maps and numerous large folio etchings.
