Volume III repaired but intact and firm. Portrait of Charles Vth in Volume II cleanly detached. All three bindings very firm and tight. Frontispieces and Interior in excellent, bright condition. Some of the maps with visible reapirs but complete. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. This being the so-called “Best Edition”.

Hitch and J.Hodges], Frontispiece, LXXII, 356 pages with two full-page copper-engravings by van Gucht (plus engraved Frontispiece). Original Hardcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. With the name “John Morrison” on the titlepage of both Volumes [possibly the 18th century – Architect John Morrison from Midleton, with a connection to Castlemartyr]. These books came subsequently from, the Library of Daniel Conner, Connerville / Bandon / Manch House in which also a set of Buffon, from the library of Richard Boyle Bernard, Dean of Leighlin and MP for Bandon Bridge was included.

Modern, recent Hardcover / Very decorative half-leather with marbled-paper-covered boards. Gilt lettering on new sppine-label. New endpapers. Protective Mylar. Only the large folding map with a inor tear (one part of the map deliberately bound separate (geniously folding out to meet th erest of the map). Interior text and maps all in excellent, unusually clean condition !!

Hardcover / Original, 18th century half-leather with marbled-paper-covered boards in protective Mylar. Spine slightly discoloured with some cracks and defects but overall the poublication firm and tight, endpapers stabilized. Interior in excellent, bright condition.

Original Hardcover / Original red half leather / demi-maroquin with gilt lettering on spine. Besides some mild foxing in very good condition with only minor signs of wear. The plates complete and in wonderful condition. Titlepage of Volume II with minor lesion. The plates show 300 different kind of birds in remarkable detail, after Victor Cassien, french lithographer, illustrator, painter and photographer.

Some old wormhole-damage. Still overall very good condition with only minor signs of wear. From the library of Richard Meade (Ballymartle), with his Exlibris / Bookplate to pastedown.

29. Maskerade / Ceremony of Dutch Students – Bos, Gerardus Johannes (1825 – 1898).

Maskerade gehouden door de leden van het Leidsche Studenten – Corps den 24sten Juni 1890, ter viering van den 315ste Verjaardag der Leidsche Hoogeschool, Voorstellende De intocht van Karel V binnen Nijmegen in 1546.

Original Lithographs. Leiden, P.Somerwil, 1890. Each Lithograph measures 36 cm wide x 25 cm high. Excellent condition. Lacks the title-page-sheet but all the 27 beautiful, coloured lithographic plates are complete.

30. Aiken, Henry David / [Hans Jonas] / Quine, W.V.O.

Typed letter, signed by German-born, American Jewish philosopher Hans Jonas, loosely inserted in Henry David Aiken’s pamphlet “God and Evil: A Study of Some Relations Between Faith and Morals”. The Essay by Aiken is inscribed and signed by Aiken in a sarcastic manner: “To God, from one of his congregation – Shem”. In the letter, Jonas reflects on two pages on an evening with Henry David Aiken and his then wife Lillian Woodworth. In his letter to Aiken, Hans Jonas reports back to Aiken after reading his essay [″God and Evil”] and calls it “a beautiful piece of work – in style and content worthy of your “master” who wrote on natural theology….”. Jonas goes on encouraging Aiken: “you are also dead wrong n not publishing a collection of your essays in ethical theory. If your pal Quine can do it “from a logical point of you [sic]”, so can you “from a moral point of view”. Jonas also mentions “that it is worth writing about the ancient problem opf a theodicy in a contemporary context”. [The Essay is n Offprint from Ethics, An International Journal of Social, Political and Legal Philosophy, Volume LXVIII, No. 2].

New York / Washington, DC, 1958. 16,8 x 24 cm. 21 pages (pages 77-97 of the Journal) plus two page-letter (on one leaf), signed by Hans Jonas Original Offprint / Original TLS (Typed letter signed). Very good+ condition. Stapled. Only minimal signs of staining. The letter also discusses a Reference for one “Ed Sayles” and Jonas suggest that Aiken writes “casual but fairly strong” to Howard R. Bartlett, professor of history and head of the Department of Humanities at MIT.
