With 22 (of 24) handcoloured illustrations by caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson. Hardcover / Original half leather with original spine-labels and ornaments. Both Volumes with some rubbing but both in firm, original condition. Interior of Volume I with some mild foxing and fingerstaining only but all plates excellent. Interior of Volume II with a tear and loss of paper to the front free endpaper, some mild foxing, one plate and one textpage (page 11) slightly detached and with fraying). Minor wormholedamage to rear board (neglectable). Overall these two Volumes are in very good condition !

Collation: Volume I: Engraved frontispiece of Stanhope, XVI, 352 pages / Volume II: (2), 355 pages / Volume III: (2), 376 pages / Volume IV: (2), 364 pages. (Collation complete). Hardcover / Original 18th century full calf with gilt lettering on original spinelabels. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Smaller dampstain to lower first and last two pages of two volumes only. The bindings a little shaky but holding. Provenance: From the library of Robert Doyne, with his Exlibris – bookplate to the front pastedown of all four volumes. While he died already in 1733 and these books were published in 1774, it is very likely that the bookplates were still applied by his librarian or family / Sir Robert Doyne (1651-1733) was member of the Irish House of Commons for New Ross from 1692 to 1695, and later a distinguished judge who served as Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer from 1695 to 1703 and Chief Justice of the Irish Common Pleas from 1703 to 1714. In the latter year like all the senior judges in Ireland appointed under Queen Anne he was removed by the new administration; while allegations of corruption were made, the removal seems to have been a simple matter of politics. Although the Irish House of Commons passed a resolution that he had acted corruptly no further action seems to have been taken against him and he lived in peaceful retirement for many years. Among the postcards also three (3) manuscript postcards by Adrian Liddel Hart’s lover, publisher John Lehmann, with interesting content (″Am staying with Harold Acton in this marvellous Villa…pity you aren’t with me….your old friend is wavering – Love J.” / another postcard by Lehmann to Adrian mentions Florence Nightingale and is also signed “Love – J.” / Other postcards with interesting content (″When the foreign ministers go bust, do you go bust too ? – Where are you and what happened to you ? )

Collection of 45 manuscript postcards, signed and sent by Sir Basil Liddell Hart’s second wife Kathleen Liddell Hart to Adrian Liddell Hart. 32 of the postcards were sent by Kathleen from trips she undertook with Basil throughout the world, reporting to Sir Basil’s son Adrian from their experiences at conferences, meetings with governments, exhausting visits to war cemeteries etc. etc. A lot of the postcards very detailed with a good insight into Basil Liddell Hart’s routines (″Basil is sweating over two articles” / “At the moment he is seeing Monnel to discuss the Schumann Plan” / etc. ). The remaining 13 postcards were all written after Sir Basil Liddel Hart’s death and for example deal with the sale of the estate: John Cooper telling me that the N.P.G. paid 9500 Sterling for the picture. He wants more information on Hein and Basil. Wonder how much our Kennington’s are worth ? /
