An extremely rare book, purchased as Duplicate from the Historical Library of the Athenaeum in Liverpool, with an ExLibris of the “Public Libraries of Liverpool” decommissioned from the “Historic Society of Lancashire & Cheshire”, formerly presented with an original ExLibris from “Jacob Kendrick of Warrington” (with his original ExLibris). Titlepage by Edwards cropped and pasted on stronger paper. Original titlepage cropped and pasted on normal paper (these two defects were already indentified by auctioneer Henry Young & Sons” and are clear markers of this being the original Randle Holme-Pennant-copy. Contents-page slightly frayed only. Corner of one page in the contents section torn. An extremely scarce publication, especially with the addition of the later published Index of Names. Interior in excellent condition.

In total 69 copperplate engravings, all drawn by John Vanderbank and engraved by Gerard van der Gucht / Vandergucht. Modern Hardcover bindings by an english masterbinder, styled to the 18th century period and with new endpapers that carry the original bookplates / Exlibris of John Fane, (Lord Burgersh) the Earl of Westmoreland. Excellent condition with only minor signs of foxing to the outer margins of the pages. All illustrations in strong and fresh imprint. An excellent set from a famous library.

Masterful binding, reimagining the original 16th century binding-style. Minor wormhole-damage. Otherwise in excellent condition with some minor signs of wear only. With manuscript annotation to the titlepage, mentioning Hugo Cardinali [Cardinal Hugo of Saint-Cher (Hugo de Sancto Charo)]. Former copy of the St.Ägidius Konvent in Hadamar with the old library-stamp obliterated / Ehemaliges Exemplar des Franziskanerklosters in Hadamar, St.Ägidius. Extremely important Bible-concordance. With some annotations in text (at word “Thabor” for example).

Venetia, Appresso I Gioliti, 1584. 9.5 cm x 15.4 cm. 107, [1] pages including illustrated titlepage with Giolito’s printer mark and Giolito’s stunning colophon of Phoenix rising from the ashes and the Motto: “Semper eadem” (″Always the same”). Hardcover in custom – made solanderbox. Recently rebound in half-leather with marbled paper-covered-boards. The bookblock in very good condition with some minor, contemporary inkstains. Name of preowner “Exlibris Bernard Rielliae [″Bernard Reilly”] in contemporary ink (16th or 17th century entry). Small lesion to titlepage and first three pages only. Very faint, faded dampstain to the outer margins of a few pages.

[XX], 226 pages plus the two rare copper engravings, depicting male and female Druids of old (Druides et Druidissae). The two plates with engravings were bound in the rear. Hardcover / Excellent, recent half-leather binding in protective Mylar. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. The half-leather slightly stained but all in wonderful condition. The original bookblock uncut. A very rare and interesting publication on Druidism / Text in latin with some german elements.

6. Illustrations for The Odyssey – Rössing, Karl.

Interessante Sammlung von originalen Briefen des Österreichischen Autors Karl Rössing and den künstlerischer Leiter der Bauerschen Gießerei, Dr. Konrad Bauer. Die detaillierten Briefe geben Aufschluss zur Entstehungsgeschichte der Publikation “Bilder zur Odyssee”, welche im Jahr 1955 in Frankfurt herausgegeben wurde. Karl Rössing spricht mit Bauer zum Thema Korrekturen im Satz, Einbanddecken, Mäander, Papierauswahl, Tondruck, Einbandgestaltung, Autorenexemplaren, Ausstellung in Braunschweig, Rezensionsverweigerung von Benno Reiffenberg, Verwendung des Buchs als Geschenk an den Bundespraesidenten (damals Theodor Heuss), “ganz einfach deshalb weil er ein fuer Kunstdinge aufgeschlossener Mensch ist”, etc. etc. Der Sammlung liegt eine originale Tuschzeichnung über Bleistift, sowie ein Probedruck des Titelholzstichs bei. Die fertige Buchausgabe liegt ausserdem hier im Originalschuber vor.

Bedeutende Dokumentation zur Buchproduktion und enger Zusammenarbeit zwischen Illustrator.

Armorial Binding from the library of Ruth Corker with manuscript entries regarding the History of family-relations and marriage of Ruth Corker (born Falkiner) of St.Stephen’s Green in Dublin during the years 1693 – 1760. The armorial binding is containing the rare fifth edition of the important Prayer – Guide by english Theologian, Hymn-writer and Logician, Isaac Watts: “A Guide to Prayer : Or A Free and Rational Account of the Gift, Grace and Spirit of Prayer; With plain Directions how every Christian may attain them”.

The Fifth Edition. London, Printed for Emanuel Matthews, 1730. Small Octavo. [5], 156, [1] pages. Hardcover / Original, early 18th century full-leather with armorial embossing to both boards. New spine-label. Ruth Corker’s Library-stamp verso the titlepage. This used to be Ruth Corker’s mother’s book prior to her own and the name Mary Falkiner is written in ink on top of the Preface-page. Manuscript entry “Ruth Corker Her Book 1731” on halftitle with several entries informing on marriages and relationships within the Falkiner and Corker and Robinson – family added obviousy by a later relative (Ruth Robinson, who was married to Robert Robinson). Excellent condition with only minor signs of wear.
