This is not the usual tourist pamphlet but a thorough architectural study of great importance for the History of this Abbey.

Provenance: From the library of a member of the 1798 Rebellion under Wolfe Tone, William Livingston Webb, with Webb’s name in ink to the titlepage of Volume I and his name also to the first page of Volume II. Webb notes in Volume two that he purchased the books in Lille. While other Protestant Leaders of the Rebellion were hanged, William Livingston Webb was exiled. With a manuscript-poem in english and remarks in french, citing “Voltaire” to rear endpaper of Volume II: “Les Tome auteur n’art de l’esprit qui autart qu’il enfant, ny le recherchant jamais pensent avec priment avec clarte” (?) – Voltaire (?).

Loosely inserted in the manuscript notebook / sketchbook, is a signed manuscript letter on stationery of Kelmscott Manor by Mary ‘May’ Morris, daughter of the Pre-Raphaelite artist and designer William Morris and his wife and artists’ model, Jane Morris [included is ephemeral material which for example informs about a pair of Episcopal Gloves, designed by William Morris’s daughter [May Morris] and the clipping continues: “Those who remember Morris’s attitude towards the Church will smile and reflect upon time’s revenges”]. The collection includes an abundance of information which easily can lead to a monograph on the life of Percy A. Wells. Already in the first chapter, Haliburton uses the technique of literary fiction in order to speak about the ability to travel everywhere (in mid 19th century)….″The Grand Tour now means a voyage round the Globe…” / Haliburton, known to have been “eager to promote immigration to the colonies of British North America” tries to entice to Travel. The Chapter “An Evening in Cork” talks about the narrator to “accompany my old college friend Cary to Monkstown in Ireland…..unlike my gruff and inhospitable countrymen, I advise you, when at Cork, to remain there, till you have ‘done’ the city and its environs and then to sail down the River…”.

Overall a very good condition with only minor signs of wear of this extremely rare and early edition of one of the rarest publications of advice on prudence and virtue, written by the Marquess of Halifax and published as an address to his daughter Elizabeth Stanhope, Countess of Chesterfield (1677 – 1708). Later editions are more common but this 17th century publication is the nicest version of this book we have ever handled.

A very rare find, this is one of the more elusive periodicals of the early 19th century, printed just after the Act of Union in 1800 was established and printed by english printer Luke Hansard for publishers and printers in London, Dublin and Cork.

Half a page in chapter “M” torn out. Faint dampstain throughout. Otherwise in very good condition. Binding rubbed and bumped on the corners but absolutely firm and tight. Minor traces of foxing and staining only. Name of preowner in 17th or 18th century ink on endpaper: “Daniel Eugene MacNamara”. Very rare Dublin Edition of this publication with a full-page recommendation of the famous Lexicographer Benjamin Martin.

Private gift-inscription and letter included: Inscribed “To Elsie with best wishes from E.Miller”. An original, signed letter by Aunt Miller to Elsie is loosely inserted. All the wonderful colour-plates by Brian Hatton are in place and in excellent condition. An extremely scarce book.

No.8 / 200 copies, of the original limited edition. Dublin, The Cuala Press, 1944 [September 1944]. Octavo. 58 pages. Original Hardcover. Inscribed by George Yeats on the front free endpaper: “Mrs. Hempel from George Yeats, April 1944”. This has to be of course “April 1945”. The impossibility of signing/inscribing a book in April 1944 if it was only published in September 1944 is easily explained with the classic everyday-mistake of still writing the previous year in the first few months of the following year. A stunning association. The signature and inscription is a solid match to George Yeats’ autographs in her later hand and William Butler Yeats and George Yeats were frequent visitors to the Hempel’s in Dublin. In addition, the low number of the edition (8/200) suggests this being one of the reference copies given to George Yeats, who contributed heavily to the volume and even added an explanatory note (in print) verso the titlepage. This copy is near fine, bound in the publisher’s quarter buckram over yellow, paper-covered boards. The books pages remained unopened. Eva Hempel’s husband Eduard Hempel is one of the most controversial figures in modern Irish history, excoriated by some as ‘Hitler’s man’, defended by others such as the country’s first President, Eamon De Valera. Certainly, Hempel presented William Butler Yeats in 1938 with a copy of ‘Germany Speaks’ whose inscription described an ‘unforgettable afternoon’ spent together by Yeats and Hempel. Eduard Hempel and his wife were accepted socialites in the Dublin world of World War II, famously receiving a condolence call by de Valera upon the death of Hitler. Eduard Hempel and his wife Eva were granted asylum in Ireland after world war II and stayed way beyond the end of World War II.

Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear for the later edition. The Leporellos both in unusually, excellent condition. No fraying to the folds of the Leporellos. Binding of the 1889 edition is poorer, The Leporello and the booklet of this version are completely detached. A few tears and damages between the folds. Both interior of booklets are very clean. Overall very good condition and all illustrations are superfresh! Extremely scarce.

Endpapers and pastedown with some minor spotting. All these descriptions of faults sound worse than they are. Interior text, plates and portraits overall in unbelievably clean and excellent condition. Name of pre-owner in ink on title and verso frontispiece (″J.Stilwell”).

The collection was established in the outgoing 1970s and early 1980s and gives an excellent view into the specimens still common at that time in Ireland and its unspoiled, non-industrial countryside. Norman Hickin subsequently published a Field Guide on Butterflies in Ireland (1992), clearly based on the specimens collected here.

Minor, faded dampstain to one Volume and decreasing wormhole-damage to one other Volume. All Volumes firm with one layer inside the Odyssey ever so slightly loosened. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. / Condition of the additional set of nine Volumes of Pope’s works: Overall very good with all Volumes firm but two Volumes with some minor damage to the spines (Volumes I and IV). Highly underestimated work, in the shadow of Gibbon but with meticulous detail in presenting the geographical impact of the Roman Conquest. Majority of the pages with damages and some with loss of text to outer margins. Extremely rare and interesting manuscript, also dealing with “Orologi a Sole Guili”.

From the library of swiss mathematician and astronomer Daniel Huber with at least two very minor manuscript annotations/corrections to the text. Subsequently this book was owned by the “Naturwissenschaftliche Museum in Basel”. Tournefort was notably the first to coin the term “Herbarium”.

A most important periodical of the early 20th century that was subscribed by nearly all of the important explorers at the time (From Shackleton and Stanley to Peary). The early discoveries colonial expeditions are all described in this periodical.
