Greer, Sex and Destiny: The Politics of Human Fertility.

Greer, Germaine.

Sex and Destiny: The Politics of Human Fertility. [SIGNED / INSCRIBED]

New York, Harper & Row, 1984. 23.6cm x 16.3cm. 541 pages. Original hardcover in original illustrated dustjacket. In protective Mylar. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Inscribed and signed by Germaine Greer to the translator, Bill Weaver: “For Bill, with Love – Germaine Greer”.

Beginning with a comparison between the parent-child relationship in the affluent West and in the villages of the Middle East, India, and Africa, Germaine Greer leads the reader to ask some of the most profound and disturbing questions ever to challenge the ethos of the nuclear family: Do we in the West hate our children? And if we protest in shock that we do not, why do we segregate them, ignore them, and repress them until they, in turn, retaliate by rejecting us in our old age ?

Even more disturbing questions follow: Is the West’s obsession with overpopulation part of its rejection of its own fertility? Do we, who take so little pleasure in our own families, insist that this rejection be imposed on others, whose major pleasure and self-esteem derive from the vitality of their family life? In the process of exploring such questions, the book deals with the customs and methods of childbirth; attitudes toward fertility and sterility; the varieties of chastity, promiscuity, and contraception, abortion and infacide; and the histories of the eugenics and birth-control movements.
