This book contains a series of ideas put forward by the Italian school of criminology founded at the end of the 19th century by Cesare Lombroso who is considered to be the father of criminology. It explores Lombroso’s concept of the atavistic born criminal, natural definitions of crime and theories of punishment. Lombroso sought to understand behavioural phenomena with reference to Darwins’ principles of evolution. Atavism became a popular concept used for instance by the novelsit Emile Zola in the Rougon – Macquart.
