Jorge Edwards fue el primer escritor latinoamericano en notar que algo
iba irremediablemente mal en la Revolución cubana. Las ilusiones
románticas de la primera etapa, que despertaron la esperanza de las
masas latinoamericanas y de los intelectuales de izquierda a nivel
mundial, comenzaban a resquebrajarse. En Persona non grata el autor
narra con agudeza su experiencia en La Habana como representante del
gobierno de Salvador Allende, adonde llegó en 1971 con la misión de
reanudar las relaciones diplomáticas entre ambos países. Tres meses
después debió partir prácticamente expulsado por el régimen castrista.

In 1970 Edwards was sent by socialist Chilean President Allende as his country’s first envoy to break the diplomatic blockade that had sealed Cuba for over a decade, and open a Chilean embassy. His arrival coincided with the turning point of the revolution, when Castro began to repress the very intellectuals he once courted. Edwards recorded his disenchantment with the revolution in this book that made him a victim of double censorship and was banned by the left as well as the right.
