Commissioned by Sir Laurence Olivier. Christopher Fry turns from the eagerness of ‘The Lady’s Not For Burning’ to an October mood in which the chief character prepares to shut the door of memory on his ‘vintage years of love’ by settling into ‘a resignation of monogamy’. This purpose is disturbed by the coming of Perpetua- the eternal Venus- whose transit reawakens the desire of attainment and provokes rivalry between the Duke and his son, to whom had been deputed earlier the selection of his father’s wife. The play shows a developing sense of dramatic action, with no lessening of the author’s characteristic richness of imagery and surging eloquence.
