The story of Irma Seidenman, a young Jewish widow trying to survive during the Nazi occupation of Warsaw. With false papers she manages to escape the Jewish ghetto but while posing as the wife of a Polish officer she is picked up by the Gestapo. The bulk of the story focuses on the hours after her arrest and eventual rescue just before the terrible burning of the Jewish quarter of the city.
