Collation: Volume I: 628 pages with 33 hand-coloured plates depicting battle scenes and landscapes / Volume II: 649, (2) pages with 40 (of 44) handcoloured plates and pages 233-240 missing. Hardcover / Volume I in a modern half-buckram with private spine-label / Volume II in its original half-leather binding. Good condition with signs of external wear. One Volume with crack to gutter between front pastedown and gutter. Loose leaf near front. Binding still firm and strong but tender near very front. Interior bright and unmarked with occasional foxing.

Disbound due to broken binding. Halftitle and bookblock available with all 9 plates included. Needs rebinding. Bookblock firm, halftitle detached. All nine plates with faded dampstain but still in beautiful and strong impression. The wide-margined Text in excellent, clean condition besides the faded dampstain. Last page of the Volume with some browning. Very minor wormhole-damage to the last 14 pages. One illustration cleanly detached. Extremely Rare Book !

WIth a strong mention of places in the area like Toe Head, Gallyhead, Cape Clear, Sandy Cove, Reen, The Stags in the Harbour, sent to the Penny Journal by F.H.T. (possibly a member of the Townsend – Family)].

An extremely rare Volume with hundreds of interesting illustrations of local irish history, many of which are showing places in Munster.

Pagination: Volume I: XVI, 403, (1) pages / Volume II: 326, (2) pages including Errata-leaf / Volume III: X, 310 pages / Volume IV: 312 pages. Original contemporary red calf with gilt lettering and ornament to lacquer-polished-spine. The Volumes are numbered consecutively, even though these are two separate works. Excellent condition of the binding and interior of this important publication with very minor signs of foxing only ! All the maps in wonderful condition ! First french edition of “Travels into the Interior of Southern Africa” (Barrow’s journey with Lord Macartney in 1797 to the Cape of Good Hope) plus two further Volumes which describe the second journey in 1801 / 1802 to Saldanha Bay [Saldanhabaai] with an early image of Robben Island. The survey of the Dutch colonies was not only a seminal work on South Africa but the beautifully engraved, large folding map of South Africa was a turning point of african cartography and geographical illustration.

Hardcover / Original half-leather with gilt lettering on spine. Front endpaper detached, otherwise in very good condition with only minor signs of wear. This being the very rare, inaugural Volume in unusually excellent condition.

London / Edinburgh and Dublin, William Mackenzie, (1879). Folio. XXVI, 204 pages with 41 stunning full-page lithographs in colour. Wonderful, recent half leather binding with new endpapers applied. Excellent condition. Extraordinarily beautiful publication with quite some romance applied to the pages juxtaposed to the colourful illustrations. Here we find the localities where one was able to catch the illustrated fish, beautifully depicted by skillful 19th century artists.

Clear embossed identical decoration on back cover. All edges gilt. Besides a faded dampstain to the upper edge of the plates in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Cover and spine slightly discoloured. Binding slightly shaky. Contains previous owners name stamped in ink to front pastedown and endpaper. Contains ‘The Museum of Natural History’ original label on front endpaper.
