Collection of manuscript and printed materials regarding a genealogical research for the aristocratic Family ‘Zandrowitsch – Zander’. Sir Harry Luke who was related to the Zander family was assisted by a lady from Koenigsberg in Prussia. The lady in question,Genealogist Helene Motherby from Koenigsberg, writes in a letter from April 6th, 1910 to Luke’s posting in Sierra Leone and has some excellent news regarding her research of the Zander family. The letter includes a manuscript family tree of the Zander family (Carl Lazarus von Zander etc.) / In a second letter from 23rd of October1911, Helene Motherby requested information from a Heraldic Office in St.Petersburg. The original answer was written in Russian and a translation into german is accompanying the original document in which Helene Motherby was informed that information regarding an aristocratic family can only be granted if the requestor can proof his/her aristocratic ancestry connected to the family in question. The request was in detail answered by pointing to the relevant Genealogical Offices in Livland / Estland / Gouvernement Kiew. / Helene Motherby apologizes for the ‘meager’ result and urges Sir Harry Luke to become a member of ‘The Society of Genealogists’ in London. She encloses the first quarterly report of ‘The Society of Genealogists of London’ which also lists the members (among them Fraulein Helene Motherby) and also includes two prefilled application forms for Sir Harry that would allow him to join the Society (Helene Motherby has signed both papers as a guarantor). /

Large Collection of original autographed and manuscript Material and Correspondence relating to the “de Zander / Zander Family”, which was intensely researched by Sir Harry Luke on his Genealogical Quest for Family Roots from both, his mothers side and his fathers side of the family. Luke determined, that his great-great-great-grandfather was Mayor Louis de Zander. The collection includes many original documents and also for example: Manuscript Letter Signed (MLS) and official documents from the Ministry of Religious Cults and Public Education in Warsaw (Poland) – transmitted through the Polish Consulate Jerusalem: The letter and documents are answers to Sir Harry Luke’s research into his family history and confirm that Luke’s ancestors were raised to nobility in the 18th century: Louis Zander, major in a regiment of militia, was raised to the nobility in 1790 in the Diet which had been convoked in Warsaw by the Confederation’ / The documents also mention Casimiro Zander and Samuel Zander and the Ennoblement of Louis de Zander.

87. [Love – Story Harry Luke/Lillie Leonora Neumann] – [Luke, Sir Harry / Lillie Leonora Bird [nee Neumann].

Collection of twentyseven (27) manuscript letters by Sir Harry Luke’s first love, Lillie Leonora Hoffmann, as mentioned in “Cities and Men”, Volume I, pages 105-105 and with a photograph on page 96 / The letters are often reaching over multiple pages and are reflecting on Lillie’s longing for her friendship to Luke becoming more. The letters were written between October 6th, 1906 and Lillie Leonora writes a sad and bitter letter to Luke’s posting at Freetown in Sierra Leone on November 21st, 1908 in which she accuses him to be indifferent to their friendship and she informs him of her need to travel to Mexico until the summer of 1909 when she closes with: “…you do not seem to care ever sufficiently to send me an idea of your daily routine which you would surely do fpr some casual friend & so I say I will not write again….till you write or till we meet goodbye. God bless you. Nov.8 – 08 – Lillie”. On November 24th, a last letter from Lillie reaches Harry Luke who must have written to her in the meantime and the two are friends again after Lillie admits she would not send the letter from Nov.8th if she would have a chance to read it again.. Lilie writes: “I got your letter – we certainly have travelled far from each other …There is nothing to say words seem singularly futile”. After this last letter Lillie Leonora dies in Mexico on April 9th, 1909, suddenly of heart failure. Luke kept i his collection a typed, standardized thank-you-card from Lillie Leonora’s husband, Mr.Robert Macdonald Bird, thanking him for “kindness and great sympathy shewn to him in his recent sorrow” [dated June 1909].

88. [Malta / Cyprus Content] – Luke, Sir Harry.

Manuscript Notepad for a “Rambling Talk / Lecture on Malta / Cyprus / Corfu / Greece / Rhodes to Prof. Powicke’s mediaeval Students from Oxford 1943” [possibly Merton College in 1943]. On six pages of a loosely stapled collection of papers, Luke notes down important bullet points of a talk he is giving to the students of Sir Frederick Maurice Powicke, Oxford’s famous Mediaeval Historian. Each page is devoted to some of Luke’s postings. Especially Cyprus and Malta are touched on regularly and the pages filled with many details. Other locations he talks about were Corfu and Rhodes. The introductory page mentions for example “…in Malta, where I was L-G. for 8 years, such divergent persons as Publius & Sam. Taylor Coleridge”, Luke also mentions Pontius Pilate, Othello, S.Paul in Malta, etc. etc.

89. [Malta Content] – [Luke, Harry] Belloc, Hilaire / Clayton, Philip Thomas Byard [″Tubby”] / Scrivenor, Sir Thomas / Patrick Terence William Span Plunket, 7th Baron Plunket / [Blackwood, Lord Basil].

The Modern Traveller. By Hilaire Belloc with pictures by B.T.B. (that is Lord Basil Temple Blackwood). Inscribed and signed by Philip Thomas Byard Clayton: “To Sir Harry Luke, Lieut. Governor of Malta & Chairman of Toc H with Gratitude from Tubby” [″Tubby” was Philip Thomas Byard Clayton, the founder of “Toc H”). With two manuscript letters to Sir Harry Luke loosely inserted. LETTER No.I: The first letter is from Patrick Plunket (Equerry to Queen Elizabeth II and Deputy Master of the Household of the Royal Household (1954-1975)). On his personal stationery (Mount Offham, West Malling (Kent)) Patrick Plunket thanks Luke for making him aware of the book (″The Modern Traveller”) by Hilaire Belloc to which Plunket’s uncle Basil (Lord Basil Blackwood) has contributed the illustrations. Plunket writes on August 1st, 1966: “Dear Sir Harry, i am writing to say how grateful I am to you for telling me about the Modern Traveller. I have it now in front of me. Uncle Basil’s drawings are superb and depict our black brothers as I am sure they would not wish to be shown today. But especially the travellers are equally ludicrous ! In fact the whole book is a delight and will be specially treasured. It makes one even sadder that my uncle insisted on joining up when we was over-age. Yours very sincerely – Patrick Plunket”. [Blackwood was killed in action in a night raid at Boesinghe near Ypres on 4 July 1917] / LETTER No. II: The second letter included in the book is from fellow colonial administrator, Sir Thomas Scrivenor to Luke in which Scrivenor alerts Luke of the fact that he enclosed an “Unpublished Ballade” by Hilaire Belloc (Typescript). He continues to talk about a piece of poetry Scrivenor wrote in reference to the Corona Club and in anticipation of a Dinner when Duncan Sandy was Secretary of State for the Colonies. This Typescript is also included.

Unidentified Manuscript Letter Signed (MLS) / Autographed Letter Signed (ALS) regarding Luke’s resignation [possibly from an order or other form of organization regarding Malta]: “Everyone at the meeting on Saturday was really sorry to hear of your resignation and it was immediately unanimously agreed that you should be invited to be the Guest of Honour at the next Dinner. I think this is particularly appropriate this year, when the 400th anniversary of the Great Siege is being celebrated – and who is there who knows more about the History of Malta than you do !”.
