Pagination of Volume One: Frontispiece-Portrait of a young John Milton, [18 unnumbered pages of Dedication and Preface], LXI pages of “The Life of Milton”, [5 unnumbered pages of Homage in Verses by Samuel Barrow [Physician to Charles II. and admirer of Milton] and also the important poem on Milton’s Paradise Lost by Andrew Marvell [English Metaphysical Poet and Milton’s ‘Latin Secretary’], 16 pages of “A Critique upon the Paradise Lost – By Mr.Addison” [Joseph Addison], 459 pages with six (6) full-page engravings / Pagination of Volume Two: Frontispiece-Portrait of an elder John Milton (dated 1670), 444 pages including six (6) full-page engravings plus 132 unnumbered pages of Index. Hardcover / Modern, stunning half-leather bound to 18th-century style with gilt lettering and ornament on spine. Both Volumes now in protective Mylar. Excellent condition with only a few signs of foxing. The paper in fantastic condition, illustrations and portraits impressive; wide margins make this a great collectable. A rare opportunity to acquire this important publication in a firm and beautiful binding. The exceptional restoration was done by an english master-bindery.

Three Volumes bound in Two (complete set). [Paris], 1726. Small-Octavo (10 cm x 16 cm). 200, 200, 224 pages. Hardcover / Original 18th century leather with gilt lettering on spine. New Spine-Label applied to Volume I. Both Volumes housed in a bespoke built Solander Box. Some minor rubbing. Provenance: From the library of a member of the 1798 Rebellion under Wolfe Tone, William Livingston Webb, with Webb’s name in ink to the titlepage of Volume I and his name also to the first page of Volume II. Webb notes in Volume two that he purchased the books in Lille. While other Protestant Leaders of the Rebellion were hanged, William Livingston Webb was exiled. With a manuscript-poem in english and remarks in french, citing “Voltaire” to rear endpaper of Volume II: “Les Tome auteur n’art de l’esprit qui autart qu’il enfant, ny le recherchant jamais pensent avec priment avec clarte” (?) – Voltaire (?).

Professionally repaired and now in excellent and firm condition in protective Collector’s Mylar. Original, very decorative half – leather with gilt lettering on spine and original spine-labels. All Volumes from the library of a “Robert Barker”, with his Exlibris. Minor signs of wear only. All Volumes with some slight foxing and very few with a faded dampstain but all Volumes also firm and in very good or even better condition with some minor signs of wear only. Excellent paper and typography. A wonderful reading experience of classics like Ivanhoe.

Published in weekly, monthly and wuarterly parts. Composed of Original Papers and Music, with Reviews of Literature in General. Illustrated with numerous Engravings, Portraits of Eminent Persons and Subjects connected with Fashion and the Fine Arts.

Two Parts in one Volume (First half year from January to July, 1822). London, Published for C.M.Westmacott, by Hoffmann, 1822. Quarto (20 cm x 27 cm). Portrait-Frontispiece, 214, Portrait Frontispiece, 208 pages plus Index for both quarterly parts with listing of all engravings, scores of original pieces of music, portraits, engravings of the latest, “newest” Parisian Costumes etc. Original Hardcover / 19th – century half leather with gilt lettering on spine. With 11 instead of 23 full-page illustrations of which some included are not called for and others seem to have never been part of the collection. Some minor signs of wear only, a few very faint signs of foxing, a little dusty endpapers but especially the text and illustrations all in generally very good or even better condition with some minor signs of wear only. Extremely Rare !

Some minor wormhole-damage to the last 20 pages of Volume Two.Minor lesions to some pages only. Faded dampstain to both Volumes. Still, both Volumes firm and complete. Important scottish enlightenment publication. From the library of one “John Courtenay”, with his name in ink on the titlepages of both Volumes. This is possibly John Courtenay (22 August 1738 – 24 March 1816), who was an Irish officer in the British Army, later becing a politician in England. Interior with tear to page 15/16, some minor foxing and browning only, some writing to interleaved pages in a child’s hand. All plates with Heraldic Bearings, Coat of Arms, Emblemata, Badges etc. included. Here the rare 1799 publication with over 500 examples of Heraldry of Ireland, Scotland and England.
