The bindins, hinges and spine in sturdy condition, very rare for such a set of Burns’ Works, which were always read intensely in the 19th century. Original Sampson Low Edition – Reduced from the Original Folio Edition. Two Volumes (complete set). London, Sampson Low, Son and Marston, 1868. Slim-Quarto (17 cm x 25 cm). Volume I: XII, 80 plates / Volume II: [6], 80 plates. Both Volumes include the tissue-guards for protecting the plates and all corresponding explanatory text and Index is present. Hardcover / Original publisher’s half-leather with gilt lettering and ornament on spine. One of the earliest and rarest publications with chromolithographic botanical illustrations. Excellent condition besides some mild, faded dampstains to some plates. Important: These bindings are usually broken, which is NOT the case here. While the book came from the library of Daniel Conner (Connerville / Manch House), the book belonged to Henrietta L. Conner [Inscribed by Sophia Perry Hornik to Henrietta L. Conner in 1890].

The illustrations include: 5 coloured chromolithographic plates one of these is a folded, double-page size), 11 woodcuts, large folded map “Route through Mexico, Guatemala & San Salvador” (this 19th century map also shows Upper California, New Mexico and Texas as well as New Orleans with Red River and the Missouri River). Hardcover / Beautifully rebacked, modern dark green morocco with gilt ornaments to spine and boards. Excellent, firm condition with only minor signs of external wear. Only very minor signs of foxing to some of the plates as usual. The text clean. Von Tempsky’s explorations and descriptions of the journey from San Francisco to Mazatlan to Durango to Mexico City to Puebla to Tehuantepec to Guatemala to Santa Catarina to San Salvador with cultural descriptions of the locals and their customs are of great value.

Exquisite collection of six (6) items/original, vintage and personal materials by/of Tom Taylor. The collection includes a 2 1/2 page, signed manuscript letter [MLS] by Tom Taylor to an unknown recipient , discussing a memorial he sent to Robert Browning’s patron, John Kenyon and mentioning former Prime Minister Lord Aberdeen [George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen]. The collection also includes two vintage 19th century cabinet photographs [Carte de Visite’s] of Tom Taylor, a later edition of Ballads and Songs of Brittany and two beautifully inscribed and signed presentation copies of his major works: 1. The first edition of Ballads of Brittany – London/Cambridge, MacMillan and Co.,1865 with many illustrations by Tissot, Tenniel etc. (This first edition is signed and inscribed by Tom Taylor to Emilia Ventana at Xmas 1864, before the publication of the book commenced) and 2. Tom Taylor’s Historical Dramas. London, Chatto & Windus, 1877. Signed and inscribed by Tom Taylor to Marie de Beauvoisier in March 1879.

Hardcover / Original publisher’s cloth with gilt lettering on boards. Binding firm with endpaper slightly detached but the whole book overall in very good condition with only minor signs of wear. All plates present with beautiful, original 19th century hand-colouring.

Hardcover / Professionally restored and decoratively rebound in full leather with new endpapers and spinelabels. This important publication comes from the eminent libraries of Indiana State Senator Calvin Fletcher and subsequently his son, educationalist, senator and Civil War Surgeon, William Baldwin Fletcher. With some annotations in the Index, highlighting for example the chapter referring to Montesquieu’s view on “Corruption” [″Of the corruption of the principles of the three governments”]. William Baldwin Fletcher, who inherited the book from his father, subsequently gifted it to a close friend of his: “Presented to Chas M O’Brien by his friend W.B.Fletcher”. Some professional paper-restoration and otherwise a very good condition with some minor signs of wear only.
