Also giving a general account of the fossil and vegetable productions of the Earth, and of every species of animal: The History of Man, in all Climates, Regions and Conditions; Customs, Manners, Laws, Governments and Religions: The State of Arts, Sciences, Commerce, Manufactures and Knowledge. Sketches of the Ancient and Modern History of each Nation and People to which is added, A Short View of Astronomy, as connected with Geography; of the Planetary System to which the Earth belongs; and of the Universe in General. With a set of Maps, drawn from the best Materials, every one of which is very neatly coloured; and a great Variety of Copper-Plates; descriptive of the most remarkable curiosities in the world. With an Appendix in two Parts, containing I. The History of the Voyages round the World, and toward the North and South Pole, which have been made since the year 1764 by English Navigators and II. A Digested and Geographical Account of the most considerable Islands and Countries which have been either discovered or explored during those Voyages, collected from every writer upon those subjects. Avec Essais: “Calder : La Liberté” / “Aux portes de L’Enfer” par Carlos Franqui (Traduction Jean-Franci Reille) / [Photos of Stabiles par Clovis Prévost]. [Calder’s Stabiles “Three Bollards” from 1970 look like possible inspirations for Heptapods “Abbott and Costello” in Denis Villeneuve’s Film “Arrival”].

First Edition. Paris, Maeght Editeur [Aimé et Marguerite Maeght], 1971. Folio (27.8 cm wide x 37.8 cm high). 28 pages including lithographed Cover. (In this edition the Text was paginated including the covers until page 26, with covers and front pastedown as well as rear paste-down and rear cover not paginated. Clearly; by the early 1970s, Aimé and Marguerite Maeght must have realized the lithographic covers were part of the appeal for collectors and they followed suit with the same pagination book-publications were paginated with this standard (first page after title is paginated as “3”). This Volume also includes a large section of black-and-white-photographs of Sculpture by Calder. Original, illustrated softcover / brochure. Lower spine with minor damage. Slightly foxed in some locations only. Overall Excellent condition with only minor signs of wear. All Lithographs in excellent condition.

Archive of Naval Captain, Lieutenant commander [LCDR] William Hamilton Porter Jr.‘s Love Letters to his wife Amy Manning Porter and letters to his mother Barbara Hamilton Porter, from his service during and after graduating from United States Naval Academy Annapolis MD, 1914. The Collection includes not only the Yearbook of the Brigade of Midshipmen, called “Lucky Bag”, signed with nearly all Graduates and with numerous amazing photographic illustrations of sports like American Football, Lacrosse, early photographs of Basketball and Baseball – Teams, images of visits to Ireland etc., but the collection includes nearly 50 manuscript letters by LCDR Porter from the USS Alden, USS Columbia, writing back home to his wife Amy between 1916 and 1920, reflecting his first tour of duty and sending letters from Constantinople, Smyrna, Venice, Dalmatia, Split, Naples, Samsoun, etc. The collection is full of reports of life on ship and upcoming tours to Naples, Genoa and Villefranche, relationship to the captain, Porter’s view on politics etc. Telegram about “USS Alden and two Destroyers of the 26th Division to be designated by USADRA proceed to Manila”. / Fantastic archive of an Annapolis Graduate with amazing artwork by Howard Chandler Christy in the “Lucky Bag” and a collection of letters in all its complete scarcity of completeness. The collection also includes the original letter of “Washington Granite Monumental” to Porter’s wife upon Porter’s burial at Arlington National Cemetery (he died in 1937).

Rare collection with the wonderful original signatures of nearly all Graduates who served with LCDR Porter.
