Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Minor lesion/tear to outer margins of page 461. Provenance: From the library of a member of the 1798 Rebellion under Wolfe Tone, William Livingston Webb, with Webb’s name in ink to the titlepage of Volume I and his name also to the first page of Volume II. Webb notes in Volume two that he purchased the books in Lille. While other Protestant Leaders of the Rebellion were hanged, William Livingston Webb was exiled. With a manuscript-poem in english and remarks in french, citing “Voltaire” to rear endpaper of Volume II: “Les Tome auteur n’art de l’esprit qui autart qu’il enfant, ny le recherchant jamais pensent avec priment avec clarte” (?) – Voltaire (?).

The armorial binding is containing the rare fifth edition of the important Prayer – Guide by english Theologian, Hymn-writer and Logician, Isaac Watts: “A Guide to Prayer : Or A Free and Rational Account of the Gift, Grace and Spirit of Prayer; With plain Directions how every Christian may attain them”.

The very rare, even scarce irish edition of this important publication of the Scottish Aesthetic Movement: “In the popular book Elements of Criticism (1762) Home interrogated the notion of fixed or arbitrary rules of literary composition, and endeavoured to establish a new theory based on the principles of human nature. The late eighteenth-century tradition of sentimental writing was associated with his notion that “the genuine rules of criticism are all of them derived from the human heart.” Neil Rhodes has argued that Lord Kames played a significant role in the development of English as an academic discipline in the Scottish Universities” (Wikipedia).

In protective Mylar. Binding rubbed and with some minor loss to leather. The binding firm and strong and endpapers and pastdeowns intact and NOT cracked ! Small signs of a faded dampstain without any consequence to the very good condition throughout. One page with a tear (Letter G). The unpaginated section was collated as complete.
