Hardcover / Original, very decorative half-leather with gilt lettering on spine. With some of the pastedowns loose. Only Volume Two with a faded dampstain, sometimes weaker, sometimes stronger throughout. One layer in volume I slightly detached. Otherwise the interior paper very good and bright. Overall in firm and very good condition with only minor signs of wear. From the library of Richard Meade, Ballymartle, with his Bookplate loosely inserted.

Hardcover / Original dark green cloth cover with gilt lettering on spine. Recently professionally repaired binding with new endpapers but also the original endpapers retained and the original Exlibris mounted to pastedown. Excellent condition after restauration. Ex-Libris (dated 1915) of sporting specialist Hugh McCausland on front endpaper. A lovely late-nineteenth century copy of Dickens’ classic novel. Manuscript entry in ink by McCausland: “Some of the illustrations in this book are probably reproductions of those by Phiz in the 1st edition”. An important, society-critical Dickens Novel, still highly relevant. Subsequently from the library of Richard Meade (Ballymartle).

Pagination: Volume I: Includes the Rare Portrait-Frontispice of “Paul Rycaut, late Consul of Smyrna & fellow of the Royal Society” by R.White, [15], 416 pages / Volume II: “A continuation of the Lives of the Popes”, 394 pages plus 18 unnumbered pages of an Index. Hardcover / Original bookblock was bound by a Master-Binder into a Modern half-leather in the style of the 17th century. In protective Mylar. The original Portrait was pasted on paper. New endpapers. Marbled-Paper-covered boards. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Provenance: Working-copy of Yorkshire Landowner Nonus Parker [signed in the book as “Ubiq. Veritatem Nonus Parker 1693”, 17th-century English gentleman who purchased an estate called “Gowk-Hill” (also referred to as Gawkhill or Cuckoo Hill) in the mid-1660s. Upon taking ownership of the land, he renamed it “Park Hill”, a historic estate located near Firbeck and Laughton-en-le-Morthen in South Yorkshire, England. Heavily annotated by Nonus Parker in ink, with personal comments on Papal History, ridiculing the entry of “Pope Joan” [John VIII]. Nonus PArker writes about Pope Joan: “Theis relation is affirmed as well as denyed by several writers, yet no fire can be ‘tis belived, without a Smoke”. Includes also a lengthy manuscript-note by Nonus Parker [verso an envelope sent to him] on “whether the Story of the wandring Jew be true”

Original Bilingual Edition in Latin and English. London, Printed for the Companie of Stationers, 1605. Quarto (19.5 cm wide x 29.3 cm high). [7], 41, 127, [2] pages. Original full leather on five raised bands. Original binding of the 17th century. Poor condition of the binding. Some fraying to the titlepage. Front pastedown missing but text complete with both endpapers. Annotated throughout in an old hand (possibly by Andrea Morrogh). Quite some wormhole-damage throughout to several pages but limited to only the outer margins of some pages without text being affected. Overall the typography and the paper-quality excellent and mostly clean. Pages mainly loose but only due the stitching of the five raised bands being separated. Name on endpaper in ink: “Ex libris Andrea Morrogh”, possibly of the Morrogh family of Inis Beg Morrogh (County Cork). Later from the library of Richard Meade in Ballymartle (near Kinsale).

Dedication leaf, Engraved frontispiece, two-coloured titlepage, (14), 377 pages with the full-page portraits interleaved and including Addenda and “A Table [Index] of the Contents of the History”] / Bound with: “A Collection of Records and Original Papers” which has its own pagination at the end of the Volume: 368 pages plus 4 unnumbered pages of “A Table [Index] of the Records and Papers….”] with Errata and “An Advertisement”. Hardcover / Original full leather. Endpapers detached from pastedowns. Armorial bookplate of Richard Meade of Ballymartle, to pastedown. The portraits clean and beautifully saturated. The engraved frontispiece with some creasing and fraying only. Clean tear on page 235. On page 313 a manuscript annotation writes “Eliza Meade”.
