Origins of Irish Identity – The Long 18th century – From Molyneux to Wolfe Tone

Irish History - Catalogue No.2

Origins of Irish Identity - The Long 18th century - From Molyneux to Wolfe Tone

A Blend of fantastic historical publications, some with exciting provenance, mainly from the 18th and 19th century – Library of Richard Meade (Ballymartle) and the remarkable Library of Daniel Conner (Manch House) , cousin of United Irishman Arthur O’Connor. The Catalogue covers the period of the so-called Long 18th-century, which we define from the 1641-Rebellion [Éirí Amach 1641] to the Death of Theobald Wolfe Tone in 1798 but also includes the period of repercussions after Wolfe Tone’s Death, all the way to the end of the Irish Potato-Famine in 1852. Most of the books from the Meade-Library and Conner-Library have been extensively restored over the past two years by master-binderies in England and Germany and four more catalogues with many landmark-publications of 18th and 19th century-Literature and History from these collections will follow in the next three months. These catalogues will include several classics of irish and english literature, many of them printed by 18th and 19th-century printers in Cork and Dublin [Please Subscribe to our E-catalogues and Newsletter]

Yeats, Pages from a Diary Written in Nineteen Hundred and Thirty. [Signed / Insc

Yeats, William Butler / [George [Georgie] Yeats / Mrs. Eva Hempel / Eduard Hempel].

Pages from a Diary Written in Nineteen Hundred and Thirty. [Signed / Inscribed by George Yeats to Mrs. [Eva] Hempel, wife of german ambassador to Ireland during World War II].

No.8 / 200 copies, of the original limited edition. Dublin, The Cuala Press, 1944 [September 1944]. Octavo. 58 pages. Original Hardcover. Inscribed by George Yeats on the front free endpaper: “Mrs. Hempel from George Yeats, April 1944”. This has to be of course “April 1945”. The impossibility of signing/inscribing a book in April 1944 if it was only published in September 1944 is easily explained with the classic everyday-mistake of still writing the previous year in the first few months of the following year. A stunning association. The signature and inscription is a solid match to George Yeats’ autographs in her later hand and William Butler Yeats and George Yeats were frequent visitors to the Hempel’s in Dublin. In addition, the low number of the edition (8/200) suggests this being one of the reference copies given to George Yeats, who contributed heavily to the volume and even added an explanatory note (in print) verso the titlepage. This copy is near fine, bound in the publisher’s quarter buckram over yellow, paper-covered boards. The books pages remained unopened. Eva Hempel’s husband Eduard Hempel is one of the most controversial figures in modern Irish history, excoriated by some as ‘Hitler’s man’, defended by others such as the country’s first President, Eamon De Valera. Certainly, Hempel presented William Butler Yeats in 1938 with a copy of ‘Germany Speaks’ whose inscription described an ‘unforgettable afternoon’ spent together by Yeats and Hempel. Eduard Hempel and his wife were accepted socialites in the Dublin world of World War II, famously receiving a condolence call by de Valera upon the death of Hitler. Eduard Hempel and his wife Eva were granted asylum in Ireland after world war II and stayed way beyond the end of World War II.

[Anonymous] Dante Alighieri / Cockerell, Douglas / North, John William / Ashendene Press Circle /

[La Divina Commedia / The Divine Comedy - Manoscritto dell'inizio del XX secolo della Divina Commedia di Dante - con strofe manoscritte da "L'Inferno / Inferno" - "Purgatorio" - "Il Paradiso / Paradiso"] - The Manuscript is titled: "Pictures Illustrating The Pilgrimage of the Divine Poet Through The Realms of Punishment of Penance and Peace" - Illuminated Devotional Manuscript of section of "L'Inferno / Inferno" - "Purgatorio" - "Il Paradiso / Paradiso" - with excerpts of Dante's Divina Comedia, in the style of medieval illuminated manuscripts. The manuscript is a strictly themed Dante Devotion and is of magical quality if one considers the fantastic, original calligraphy artwork, the composition of the manuscript and the coded meaning to the composer of this manuscript. The Folio - size manuscript is massive and has 216 pages, of which 109 pages are with illuminated, original watercolour-paintings in the style of the medieval masters, sometimes collages with watercolour and original etchings, engravings etc. The miniature paintings are juxtaposed with 105 vintage 19th century photographs of famous Italian Art - pieces that are somehow related to Dante's world or have an allegorical assoziation. Besides the early photographs other juxtaposed artwork or integrated artwork to the illuminations are: an original watercolour depicting the dying Dante, a sensational copper-engraving, depicting an allegorical Dante-scenario, possibly referring to the Divine Comedy, a small photograph of the famous Michelino Fresco encapsulated in one of the illuminations, an artprint attributed "Burne-Jones", two lithographs, a large steel-engraving, a smaller steel-engraving. Most of the photographs show allegorical sculpture or art by famous italian artists like Giotto, Carpaccio, Andrea Castagna, Luca delkla Robbia, Bellini, Titian, Dosso Dossi, Orgagna, Andrea del Sarto, Fra Angelico, Paul Veronese, Botticelli, Raphael, Michelangelo, Bonifazio, Neri dei Bicci, Francesco Traini, Benozo Gozzoli, etc. etc. and other juxtaposed refer in code to Dante's Divina Comedia or even depict himself in artform. The photographs also include some breathtaking 19th century Albumen prints of Verona, Lake Garda, Mantua and other Italian landscapes.

England, [Douglas Cockerell / John William North], no year [c.1910]. Folio (34 cm wide x 42.5 cm high). 216 pages. Hardcover / Binding in full green morocco with lettering and Dante’s head as bronze sculpture per inlet to front cover. Binding by Douglas Cockerell, signed “WHS”, during his directorship of W.H.Smith & Son (1905 – 1914). The manuscript is on excellent paper, watermarked O.W.P. & A.C.L. [O.W. Paper & Arts Co. Ltd., established by English painter John William North (1842-1924) in 1895]. The binding rubbed and with some small damages, in need of some minor restoration but overall still very good. The interior, the paper and the artwork all in excellent condition besides one of the juxtaposed photographs (Filippina Lippo) removed from the manuscript with some residue of the photograph remaining and some of the photographs with some dogears and minimal discoloration. All the original artwork in spectacular and fresh condition. The manuscript is a spectacular find and the quality of its execution is of utmost interest for any lover of rare books, manuscripts and special bindings. The circle of Douglas Cockerell, his involvement in one of the most beautiful books ever printed: the Ashendene Press Dante, as well as Cockerell being the binder of this unique manuscript, the fantastic paper used for the manuscript by one of the idyllist movement’s central figures, John William North, and the wonderful Dante – theme of the manuscript with illuminated poetry from the Divine Comedy and the unique style of collage art, lets us rightfully dream that the anonymous composer of the manuscript was an important or at least peripheral member to either the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Ashendene Press or it was someone who worked in the style of the calligraphy schools that were inspired by William Morris or even earlier epigones like Owen Jones.

Small Collection / Small Archive of two very rich and personal, handwritten & signed letters on cards by Sendak, together with a wonderful collection of fourteen (14) loose gicleé prints of original drawings by Maurice Sendak in colour or black and white: 'A Kiss for Little Bear' x 2 (26.5 cm x 34.5 cm) / 'Zlateh the Goat' x 2 (24 cm x 30 cm and 37.5 cm x 30 cm) / 'Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present' x 1 (33.4 cm x 41.5 cm) / Lullabies and Night Songs' x 2 (35 cm x 26.5 cm and 44.5 cm x 33.5 cm) / 'Hector Protector' x 1 (46 cm x 26 cm) / 'In the Night Kitchen' x 4 (50 cm x 36 cm) / Higglety Pigglety Pop x 2 (28 cm x 35.5 cm). The two cards are addressed to one "Minnie" and were written at Christmas 1986 and Christmas 1987. Both are similar in content because Minnie was obviously supplying Sendak with "Rocks" [these could be "fossiles" or possibly Art or books with art by Norman Rockwell]. One of the cards featuring Sendak's art from the cover of Nutcracker and addressed to Minnie, reading in part "I worked all year on a picture-book - a Grimm tale (my first book in 8 years !!). I am in love with it and it gets published next year....my wild things celebrate their 25th anniversary. I hope i enjoy it all. Am hoping for a quiet year ahead illustrating a Grimm tale and staying put - I am tired of travelling and theatre projects. And look forward to creeping back into my old role as book illustrator" / "The rocks arrived while I was away working in England. They are wonderful, of course, and very much appreciated. Thank you again and again. My animals. I have but one. My darling Golden Retriever, Io, had to be put to sleep 2 weeks ago. She was 15 1/2 and I held her and stayed with her to the end. It is so sad, naturally, but the memory fills me with a kind of joy. I have a 3 1/2 year old German Shepherd named Runge after a German painter (19th century). [Cobbett, Two Manuscript Books of Laboratory Notes by Louis Cobbett (1863 – 1947

[Cobbett, Louis] [mentioned are: Behring, Emil von / Koch, Robert / Metchnikoff, Ilya (Élie) / Dönitz, Friedrich Karl Wilhelm / Ehrlich, Paul / Shield, Marmaduke and others]

Two Manuscript Books of Laboratory Notes by student of bacteriology and later publisher of "The Causes of Tuberculosis", Louis Cobbett (1863 - 1947), dealing in these lab notes with the discovery of remedies for Tuberculosis and Diphtheria. Original, two-volume Manuscript-Compendium of research-notes regarding all the important discoveries in Bacteriology (Diphtheria and Tuberculosis) by contemporaries of Louis Cobbett during the years 1885 - 1908 (Behring, Koch, Metchnikoff etc.). The notes were started by Louis Cobbett in 1885, after graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge and while he was working towards his degree in 1899. The stunning documents are not only reading like a first-hand-journal of discoveries, citing and reflecting on all the important developments and medical advancements of the outgoing 19th and beginning 20th century, but these notes were written parallel to Robert Koch, Emil von Behring and others making their breakthrough discoveries for mankind's desperately needed cures against Tuberculosis and Diphtheria. Cobbett reflects on the publications in the "Zeitschrift fuer Hygiene" and separately published books and articles. Louis Cobbett lists all the important and also the critical publications leading up to (for example) Koch's discovery of Tuberculin (e.g.: Beck - "Ueber die diagnostische Bedeutung des Kochschen Tuberculins"), he mentions Emil von Behring, Paul Ehrlich's "Ueber die Constitution des Diphteriegiftes", he cites A.Jeffery Turner's "Statistics on the Diphtheria mortality of the 3 principal Australian Colonies for the past 15 years" (published in 1899), he writes about Tuberculin production in fowl, he reflects on A.Calmette and G. Guerin, "supporting [Emil von] Behring in his contention that pulmonary tuberculosis is of intestinal origin". Other mentions are "TB of human origin (from a cervical gland)", he speculates on the publication by Fiebiger and Jensen regarding the transmission of tuberculosis from human to animal, he offers drawings of cultures with Rabbit emulsions, Bovine Characters, Avian cultural characters etc. A few lectures are referred to, including one by Sims Woodhead, a colleague of Louis Cobbett and no doubt attended by Cobbett himself; one newspaper report has been pasted in: 'Important conference' in Leeds, from Yorkshire Post 1899 / Louis Cobbett intensely elaborates on Kossel and his report on the english Tuberculosis - Commission in 1908 (H. Kossel - Die Tuberkulosefrage und die Arbeiten der englischen Tuberkulosekommission).

[Cambridge], c. 1885 – 1908. Octavo (17 cm x 21 cm). 90 blank leaves with manuscript entries in each volume, usually written on rectos only. Hardcover / Original half leather with dark blue cloth-covered boards bearing paper-labels to covers, detailing some of the sources cited within; marbled endpapers and edges. Beston to Admiral William Sowden Sims - with original typescript in an envelope that is tipped into the pastedown / It is a typescript of a letter that was written during Beston's time as editor at the magazine "The Living Age" (an offshoot of 'Atlantic Monthly') and stunningly also reflects on Beston's classmate, Theodore Roosevelt, whom he obviously gave a copy of this book and according to Beston's letter to Sims, Theodore Roosevelt and his children confirming that they enjoyed it. The letter reveals that Beston sends this book as a "thank you" to Admiral Sims for his time as war correspondent under Sims' command during World War I. The typescript of the letter must be seen as an extension to Beston's Preface in the book in which he writes: "And no acknowledgment, no matter how studied or courtly, its phrasing, can express what I owe to Admiral Sims for the friendliness of my reception, for his care that i be shown all the Navy's activities, and for his constant and kindly effort to advance my work in every possible way."
