The publication of this Munster gentry, which some who appeared in it described as “the Dead Sea Scrolls”, initiated a career in the difficult field of Irish genealogy, made the more arduous by the destruction of records at the Four Courts. While the Volume is rough, it has the typical charme of an underestimated, very rare publication by a local Cork poet [which is manifested by Milliken dedicating the work to the members of the Cork Library Society at the time]. This Volume is of utmost rarity.

Very good condition of this extremely rare edition (no.129 of 250 copies only) with only very minor signs of external wear / some rubbing to the binding and bumping to the corners. Some corners very slightly fingerstained and with a hint of a faded dampstain. Name of former owner on endpaper: “Martin F. Jackson – 501 – 5 ave. New York City”.

Stunning provenance of the First Edition-offprint from ‘The Philosophical Review’, Vol. XVI, No. 1, January, 1907, of William James’ Presidential Address to the American Philosophical Association on December 28th, 1906. A study of psychic energy ranging from Pierre Janet to Yoga to the “mind-cure” movement. James already is fascinated in this address about G.Papini’s “Doctrine of Action”, “the study of all human powers and means”.

1907. Octavo. 19 pages. Original Wrappers / Softcover. The wrappers detached and brittle. The pages stapled and in very good condition. James retired in January 1907 from Harvard. Possibly one of the rarest offprints with a William James-connection and with high probability, a gift from James to his wife. Books with the provenance of his wife never seem to surface on the market.
