“Calder’s Universe” – Large Collection of seventyone (71) Books and Lithograph-Portfolios on and by American Artist Alexander “Sandy” Calder. The collection includes not only rare Volumes with original Lithographs, some very rare Exhibition-catalogues, Autobiographies and a collection of wonderful issues of eleven Derriere Le Mirroir, most of them with original Lithographs by Calder, but also the rare, signed Artist Book: “A BESTIARY” – [One of 50 copies on luxurious Rives-mould, signed by Calder and Wilbur]. Hardcover in custom – made solanderbox. Recently rebound in half-leather with marbled paper-covered-boards. The bookblock in very good condition with some minor, contemporary inkstains. Name of preowner “Exlibris Bernard Rielliae [″Bernard Reilly”] in contemporary ink (16th or 17th century entry). Small lesion to titlepage and first three pages only. Very faint, faded dampstain to the outer margins of a few pages.

Interior with some minor browning. Overall in a very much very good+ condition. Wonderful bilingual edition of the classics, published still during Shakespeare’s lifetime.

[Pagecount of 347 is incorrect and should be “694”, because only every second page is imprinted with progressing numeration]. Beautiful, recent Hardcover / Modern half-leather with gilt lettering on spine and marbled, paper-covered boards. New endpapers. Bookblock and interior in very good and firm condition. Faded dampstain to some of the text only. Very rare and important renaissance-publication.

5. Overbury, Sir Thomas.

The fifteenth Impression. London, Printed by R.E. for Robert Allot and are to be sold at the sign of the Beare in Pauls Church-yard, 1632. Duodecimo (9,8 cm x 14,5 cm). 317 unnumbered pages (collated complete). 18th century Hardcover (full leather with gilted spinelabel ‘Overbury’). The binding professionally repaired. 18th century endpaper with handwritten notes in ink. Manuscript exlibris ‘Paul Exner ex libris 939’. Several contemporary ownership signatures within the book (for example Henry Grier, 12th of Apryll 1687). Titlepage professionally repaired. Wonderful example of this rare book.

6. Felton, Henry / [Duke of Devonshire].

A Dissertation on Reading the Classics and forming a Just Style [Including the Chapters: “The Opinion that Homer wrote loosly [sic] and without any premeditated Scheme, considered and refuted” and “The late Duke of Devonshire’s Character as a Scholar”]. Written in the Year 1709 and addressed to the Right Honourable John Lord Roos, the present Marquis of Granby by Henry Felton, D.D. Rector of Whitwell in Derbyshire.

The Third Edition, corrected. London, Printed for Jonah Bowyer at the Rose in Ludgate-street, 1718. Small-Octavo. XX, [6], 230 pages. Hardcover / Original, 18th century full leather with a new spine in the style of the period. Original spine-label preserved. Excellent restoration by a master-bookbindery. Very good condition with some signs of external wear.

7. [Webb, William Livingston / United Irishmen] [Muralt, Béat Louis de (1665-1749)].

Lettres sur les Anglois et les François et sur les Voiages [Voyages].

Three Volumes bound in Two (complete set). [Paris], 1726. Small-Octavo (10 cm x 16 cm). 200, 200, 224 pages. Hardcover / Original 18th century leather with gilt lettering on spine. New Spine-Label applied to Volume I. Both Volumes housed in a bespoke built Solander Box. Some minor rubbing. Provenance: From the library of a member of the 1798 Rebellion under Wolfe Tone, William Livingston Webb, with Webb’s name in ink to the titlepage of Volume I and his name also to the first page of Volume II. Webb notes in Volume two that he purchased the books in Lille. While other Protestant Leaders of the Rebellion were hanged, William Livingston Webb was exiled. With a manuscript-poem in english and remarks in french, citing “Voltaire” to rear endpaper of Volume II: “Les Tome auteur n’art de l’esprit qui autart qu’il enfant, ny le recherchant jamais pensent avec priment avec clarte” (?) – Voltaire (?).

8. Cervantes De Saavedra, Miguel [Jarvis Edition with an excellent provenance, being from the library of John Fane, (Lord Burgersh) the Earl of Westmoreland].

Pagination: Volume I: Frontispiece, XXIV, (8), I – [XXIV], (interrupted with 8 unnumbered pages: “Supplement to the Translator’s Preface,” on the origin of books of chivalry, [by Wiliam Warburton]), continued pagination [XXV-XXXII], Second Frontispiece (Portrait of Cervantes by George Vertue after G. Kent), V, (2), 355 pages with 28 copperplates (including the two frontispieces). Volume II: XII, 388 pages with 41 copperplate illustrations. In total 69 copperplate engravings, all drawn by John Vanderbank and engraved by Gerard van der Gucht / Vandergucht. Modern Hardcover bindings by an english masterbinder, styled to the 18th century period and with new endpapers that carry the original bookplates / Exlibris of John Fane, (Lord Burgersh) the Earl of Westmoreland. Excellent condition with only minor signs of foxing to the outer margins of the pages. All illustrations in strong and fresh imprint. An excellent set from a famous library.

Hardcover / Modern, stunning half-leather bound to 18th-century style with gilt lettering and ornament on spine. Both Volumes now in protective Mylar. Excellent condition with only a few signs of foxing. The paper in fantastic condition, illustrations and portraits impressive; wide margins make this a great collectable. A rare opportunity to acquire this important publication in a firm and beautiful binding. The exceptional restoration was done by an english master-bindery.
