Cauldwell is the author of “Studies in a Dying Culture” and “Illusion and Reality”/ He has achieved a posthumous reputation as an original thinker which has been steadily growing/ He was born in Putney in 1907/ He attented the college of St. Benet’s, Ealing/ and worked as a reporter on the “Yorkshire Observer” of which his father was literary editor/ His untimely death in the Spanish War at the age of 29 deprived us of one of the outstanding intellectual figures of his generation/ He became absorbed in Marxism toward the end of 1934 and moved to the East End of London to study working class conditions first hand/ He joined the Communist Party and went to Paris to study the Popular Front movement.
