Recent years have confirmed the special position of Jack B. Yeats in twentieth century Irish painting. For the visitor to this exhibition the clear development of the artist’s style from graphic work to watercolours to oil paintings is an intriguing visual experience. The late pictures are splendid in their use of colour, impasto and subject matter.

This excellent catalogue printed with entries in three languages demonstrates the fact that Yeats is an Irish painter of European stature. The Exhibition is of particular importance to the National Gallery in that it offers visitors the opportunity to study paintings by Yeats from private collections alongside those from the national collections.
