London, Henry G. Bohn, 1859. 18 cm. VIII, 500 pages. Illustrations, including frontispiece, in black and white. Original illustrated hardcover. Good condition with only very minor signs of external wear. There is noticeable rubbing to the spine and it has become slightly frayed at its top and bottom; also, an inside page has been cut/torn. Inscribed and signed by Admiral Sir Arthur Cavenagh Leveson to Charles E. Hoyle in 1928.

Admiral Sir Arthur Cavenagh Leveson GCB (27 January 1868 – 26 June 1929) was a senior officer in the Royal Navy. He was the Rear Admiral Commanding His Majesty’s Australian Fleet from 9 January 1917 to 3 September 1918 and later Commander in Chief, China Station from 10 September 1922 to 22 April 1925.
After the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, he was second in command of the 2nd Battle Squadron, and was present at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916, where he was Mentioned in dispatches, received a Companion of the Order of the Bath in the Military Division of the Order of St. Stanislaus (First Class) with swords and the Order of the Rising Sun (Second Class).

He was appointed the Rear Admiral Commanding HM Australian Fleet in January 1917, commander of the 5th Battle Squadron in October 1918 and commander of the 2nd Battle Squadron in April 1919. He was appointed Commander in Chief, China Station in September 1922. He became the First and Principal Naval aide-de-camp and was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath on 3 June 1927. (Wikipedia)

He is noted today as an early pioneer of the sea story, particularly for his semi-autobiographical novel Mr Midshipman Easy (1836), for his children’s novel The Children of the New Forest (1847), and for a widely used system of maritime flag signalling, known as Marryat’s Code.
