One of the first sociological studies of conditions within the penal system of England and Ireland compared to other 18th-century practices within European Jails / Gaols. The partly romantic engravings seem sinister when one imagines what inmates and children endured within these settings. Good condition with signs of external wear, for example front cover and spine are worn and slightly rubbed. Slight discolouration to pastedown and endpaper. A dampstain fading from titlepage towards page 81 (the stain gets progessively smaller and smaller and is overall very pale and no nuisance). Interior and also the full-page engravings in excellent condition. The wonderful large folded map of the Roman empire in excellent condition besides a faded peripheral dampstain.

The Cheshire Prophecy in Chapbook-Style with an advertising bound before the titlepage and “Price Six-Pence” on cover.

This work is difficult to handle if not in a sturdy binding ! Original Edition in professionally rebound halfleather with gilt lettering on spine and extra-strong boards, suited for this heavy set. This masterpiece of underestimated english local history is of great interest because of its fold out maps and numerous large folio etchings.

Original Hardcover / 18th century full leather with new spinelabels. All three Volumes are now in protective Mylar. with dustjacket. All Volumes with some damage to spine but all still firm and holding. Overall some faint staining and foxing only at very few locations because of the excellent paper-quality of this publication.
